The Cleve Gray Foundation completed a gift of five paintings to The Center for Discovery (https://www.thecenterfordiscovery.org) in Harris, NY in September 2024. Above are (from left to right) Zen Gardens #61, Zen Gardens #78 and Man and Nature #10 on display in the school auditorium.

June 2024Cleve Gray’s “Cortez” (1959) on display at the new Palmer Museum of Art at Penn State University, which opened to the public on June 1st, 2024. This painting was donated to the Palmer Museum by the Cleve Gray Foundation in 2022.

	In 2022, the Cleve Gray Foundation completed a gift of three paintings to the Naugatuck Valley Community College (NVCC) in Waterbury, Connecticut. On December 14th, Thaddeus Gray attended a donor appreciation luncheon at NVCC and spoke about Cleve Gray, his career as an artist and the paintings the Cleve Gray Foundation donated to NVCC. Pictured with him in front of “Candenza #15” are NVCC Foundation Chairperson Charles Pagano and former NVCC Foundation board member Bill Burgess.&#38;nbsp;

	Cleve Gray in Connecticut Modern: Art, Design, and the Avant-Garde, 1930–1960 at the Bruce Museum.&#38;nbsp;

For three decades, Connecticut was a true international center of innovation in the arts. Although turn-of-the-century landscape painting has been justly celebrated at the Bruce and elsewhere, the significance of the state’s place in the history of 20th century modernism has gone largely unnoticed. Cleve Gray (1918 – 2004) graduated Summa Cum Laude from Princeton University, where he studied painting and Far Eastern Art under the acclaimed scholar George Rowley.&#38;nbsp; Like many of his generation, he joined the United States Army during World War II, serving in England, France and Germany.&#38;nbsp; After the war, he remained in Paris on the GI Bill, where he furthered his study of painting under the cubist Jacques Villon.

In the 1960s he formed a close friendship with Barnett Newman. It was during this time that he experienced an artistic metamorphosis, dissolving his earlier cubist compositions in a sea of distilled color. This dramatic body of work marked the beginning of an artistic meditation that would last for over 40 years. The rigors of French modernism, the ethos of Abstract Expressionism and the meditative restraint of Chinese and Japanese scroll painting commingle with astounding affect. The atmospheric, subdued tones of his 1960s paintings gradually gave way to bright, monochromatic fields of color, hazily washed onto the canvas in stain like swathes. Much of his work from the last three decades of his career feature striking graphic brushwork that conjures the influence of Japanese and Chinese calligraphy. The artist lived and worked in Warren, Connecticut for five decades with his wife, author and New Yorker staff writer, Francine du Plessix Gray.

		<description>MISSION

	
	Cleve Gray (1918-2004) was a leading abstract expressionist artist of the post-war era who lived and worked in Warren, Connecticut. The Cleve Gray Foundation was established by his wife and children to perpetuate Gray’s artistic legacy and contribute to social and cultural causes he strongly believed in.

The Cleve Gray Foundation currently owns a substantial body of works of art created during Gray’s 60-year career. The Foundation is seeking to make donations of this work to museums, schools and other not-for-profit institutions around the United States. (A list of institutions that have accepted donations of his artwork is included on this website.) The Foundation’s goal is for these works to amplify Gray’s legacy as an important artist of the post-war period, perpetuate the scholarship of his work by the viewing public, and provide an educational experience for students to enhance their knowledge and enjoyment of modern art.

Proceeds from artwork sold by the Foundation will be contributed to registered charities, with a focus on Northwestern Connecticut and the greater New York area, where Gray lived and worked for his entire life. Areas of charitable interest for the Foundation include education,workforce development, assistance to the elderly, food assistance, mental health, substance abuse prevention and cultural programs focused on the arts. Grant requests will be taken into consideration if submitted to the Foundation through this website.
